Donald Trump, soon to become the 47th President of the United States, has chosen to use two Bibles during his swearing-in ceremony, both of which hold deep personal and historical significance. This follows a similar tradition from his 2017 inauguration when he also used two Bibles: one from his mother and another that was used during Abraham Lincoln’s inauguration.
The first Bible, a 1953 Revised Standard Version, was gifted to Trump by his mother in 1955 when he graduated from Sunday school at age nine. This Bible is a symbol of his personal faith, with his name on the cover and church officials’ signatures inside. It reflects the values Trump was raised with and his strong connection to his family’s religious background.
The second Bible, known as the Lincoln Bible, holds significant historical importance. It was first used by Abraham Lincoln during his 1861 inauguration and has been used by several other presidents, including Barack Obama. Trump’s use of this Bible is meant to align his presidency with the unity and leadership that Lincoln demonstrated during a divided period in American history.
Trump’s team has explained that the decision to use these two Bibles symbolizes his commitment to “preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution.” This choice reflects a blend of personal faith and national tradition, resonating with the American public and emphasizing continuity with the nation’s history.
While the U.S. Constitution doesn’t require a religious text for the presidential oath, many presidents have chosen to swear on a Bible to give the moment added solemnity. For Trump, the two Bibles represent powerful symbols of his personal journey and his connection to the legacy of American leadership.
