Maldives has come on the back foot after the objectionable statements of ministers on PM Modi and India. The Maldives government has taken action against 3 ministers in this matter. Ministers Maryam Shuja, Malsha, and Hasan Jishan, who made objectionable statements against PM Modi, have been removed from their posts. Shiuna was the Minister of Art, Youth, Information, and Youth Empowerment in the Government of Maldives. He had given objectionable statements after PM Modi’s visit to Lakshadweep.
Apart from this, two other ministers of the Maldives government also used abusive language. Now he too has had to lose his post. Maldives is seeing PM Modi’s visit to Lakshadweep as a threat to its tourism sector. When PM Modi visited Lakshadweep on January 2, he praised this beautiful place.
It is noteworthy that every year lakhs of Indian tourists go to Maldives for holidays. But after PM’s visit, suddenly people started searching for Lakshadweep on Google search. Seeing this, the Maldives got angry and its leaders started making objectionable statements.
But after this, India showed a tough stance and raised the objectionable statements of the ministers with the Maldives government. The Maldives government distanced itself from Minister Shiuna’s statement, calling it personal. The Maldivian government said, ‘We are aware of derogatory comments on social media platforms against foreign leaders and high officials. These opinions are personal and do not represent the views of the Government of Maldives. Moreover, the concerned authorities of the government will not hesitate to take action against those making such derogatory remarks.
Former Maldives President Mohammed Nasheed and Maldives Reform Movement President Faris had also demanded the government take action on the objectionable statements. After this, the pressure on the Maldives government to take action increased.
After the objectionable statements of Maldivian ministers, Boycott Maldives started trending on social media and people even shared pictures of their canceled tickets on social media. Not only this, Indian film stars also condemned the attitude of Maldivian ministers and wrote heartfelt praises for Lakshadweep.
