IPL 2024 is going to be no less than a nightmare for Mumbai Indians. Mumbai won the IPL trophy in 2020, after that the team has not been able to achieve big feats in the next three seasons i.e. 2021, 2022 and 2023, while in 2024 also the condition of this team is bad. Under the leadership of new captain Hardik Pandya, MI has won only 3 of the 8 matches played so far. In such a situation, this team’s hopes of going to the playoffs are gradually fading away. However, despite losing five matches so far, the doors to the playoffs are still open for Mumbai. That means this team still has a chance to make it to the top-4.
Mumbai need to win every remaining match
Mumbai is currently at seventh position in the points table with 6 points. From here this team has six matches left. In such a situation, to get the playoff ticket, Mumbai will have to win all the remaining matches, which will take the team’s total points to 18 points. However, even a single defeat can spoil the equation of entry into the top-4. If we look at the figures for 2022 and 2023, the team that finished the league stage with 16 points had to depend on the results of other matches for qualification. In such a situation, if Mumbai manages to win five of its upcoming six matches, then its hopes of qualifying will remain alive. But, two defeats from here will show Pandya and Company out of the tournament.
How was the journey of Mumbai so far?
Mumbai had a very bad start in the 17th season of IPL. In the first match itself, Pandya’s team had to face defeat by 6 runs at the hands of Gujarat Titans. After this, Sunrisers Hyderabad also defeated by 31 runs. The series of defeats did not end there. Even in its third match of the season played at home ground Wankhede, Mumbai had to face defeat by 6 wickets against Rajasthan Royals. However, after this MI returned to the winning track by defeating Delhi Capitals and Royal Challengers Bangalore in consecutive matches, but then in the next match, Chennai Super Kings defeated them by 20 runs. Mumbai came to life after defeating Punjab Kings by 9 runs in their seventh match, but then got crushed by RR by 9 wickets in the eighth match.
