Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma retired from T20 International after the final of T20 World Cup 2024. As soon as Virat won the title, he immediately informed the broadcaster about his retirement, while Rohit announced his retirement in the press conference. The retirement of both of them from T20 International marked the end of an era of Indian cricket. Rohit has been a part of India’s T20 team since 2007 and Virat since 2010. Both of them made many big records in this format and now ended their careers by becoming T20 champion.
Beginning in June and ending in June itself
Kohli started his T20 International career on 12 June 2010. Now after 14 years, he played his last match in June itself. Virat played 125 T20 matches for India, scoring 4188 runs at an average of 48.69. He is the second highest run scorer in this format after Rohit Sharma. Kohli scored one century and 38 half-centuries in his career. He is also the batsman with the highest score of 1292 runs in the history of T20 World Cup. He also has the maximum number of 15 half-centuries in his name in the T20 World Cup
Kohli announced his retirement on Saturday
Announcing his retirement while receiving the award, Kohli said, ‘This was my last T20 World Cup, this is what we wanted to achieve. One day you feel like you can’t run and this happens. The one above is great. It was a situation like now or never. This was my last T20 match playing for India. We wanted to lift that cup. Nothing I wasn’t going to announce. Even if we had lost, I would have retired.It is time for the next generation to take the T20 game forward. It has been a long wait for us, waiting to win an ICC tournament. You look at a player like Rohit, he has played nine T20 World Cups and this is my sixth World Cup. He deserves this victory
Rohit finished as champion
Whereas, talking about Rohit, he started his T20 international career by winning the T20 World Cup trophy in 2007. He was also a part of the team that became champion under Dhoni in 2007. Now in the ninth edition, he himself led India to become the T20 World Cup champion and also ended his career as a champion. Rohit has won 50 matches as captain in T20 for Team India and this is also a record. No captain has won more matches than him in T20 till now
Rohit’s goodbye speech
Announcing his retirement, Rohit said that there could not be a better time than this. He said- I was desperate to win this trophy and the T20 World Cup. Rohit said that he will continue to play for India in Test and ODI formats, but he is withdrawing from the shortest format. “There couldn’t be a better time to say goodbye,” Rohit said during the post-match press conference, celebrating India’s historic second T20 World Cup title.
