Indian captain Rohit Sharma, who is struggling with a bad phase, practiced with the Mumbai team on Tuesday ahead of the second phase of Ranji Trophy starting on January 23, but it is not yet clear whether he will play in the upcoming match or not.
Thirty-seven year old Rohit was in very poor form during the Australia tour. He scored only 31 runs in three Tests in Australia and opted out of the fifth and final Test in Sydney. He took part in a practice session that lasted for a few hours in the morning at the Wankhede Stadium. He batted with Mumbai legend and his India teammate Ajinkya Rahane.
A Mumbai Cricket Association official said, “When there is a gap between tournaments, the procedure is that the team management asks the players about their availability.” He said, “Rohit is expected to play against Jammu and Kashmir on January 23.” This will be asked at the time of team selection for Ranji Trophy matches.” Rohit had handed over the captaincy to Jasprit Bumrah in the Sydney Test, which led to speculations about his future. However, in an interview given to the host broadcaster of the series, Rohit said that he is not going anywhere.
He had attended a meeting on Sunday to review the team’s performance in which head coach Gautam Gambhir and new BCCI secretary Devjit Saikia were also present. Mumbai has to play Jammu and Kashmir in the first match of the second phase of Ranji Trophy starting from January 23.
