Aggressive batsman Suryakumar Yadav has emerged as the dark horse in the race to become India’s T20 captain till the 2026 World Cup and he can defeat top contender Hardik Pandya, who till now was considered the natural choice to be made captain from vice-captain.
Pandya had made himself available for the shortest format matches against Sri Lanka this month but it has been learned that Suryakumar, who captained India in 8 T20 Internationals against Australia and South Africa last year, has joined the new head coach Gautam Gambhir and the selection committee. The chairman of the committee is Ajit Agarkar’s first choice.
Suryakumar is the perfect fit for the position!
It is learned that Gambhir and Agarkar spoke to Pandya this evening about this plan change and told him that long-term options are being finalized to ensure stability. After India’s T20 World Cup victory in West Indies last month, Rohit Sharma bid goodbye to the shortest format of cricket at the international level, after which the search for a new captain is going on.
A senior source in the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) told PTI on condition of anonymity, ‘Hardik Pandya was the vice-captain of India’s T20 team under the leadership of Rohit Sharma. He is fully fit and available for the 3-match T20 International series and was expected to lead the team. Still, there is a strong possibility that Suryakumar Yadav will be the potential captain not only for the Sri Lanka series but till the 2026 World Cup.’
33-year-old Suryakumar is considered one of the most popular players in the Indian dressing room. It was under Gambhir’s captaincy in Kolkata Knight Riders that he made his mark as a T20 player. With Suryakumar Yadav at the helm and Gambhir as the coach, India looks forward to building a strong team for future challenges. The upcoming series will be important to test new strategies and players before major tournaments.
