Vinesh Phogat on Thursday announced her retirement after being disqualified ahead of the wrestling final at the Paris Olympics 2024. Vinesh was close to creating history after becoming the first Indian woman to qualify for the Olympic wrestling final. However, the 29-year-old wrestler remained 100 grams overweight on Wednesday morning. Due to this, she was disqualified from the 50 kg category competition.
Vinesh announced her retirement on platform X
Vinesh poured her on the social media platform, she shared an emotional post on X announcing her retirement.
She said, “ माँ कुश्ती मेरे से जीत गई मैं हार गई माफ़ करना आपका सपना मेरी हिम्मत सब टूट चुके इससे ज़्यादा ताक़त नहीं रही अब।
अलविदा कुश्ती 2001-2024 🙏
आप सबकी हमेशा ऋणी रहूँगी माफी”
Which translates to
“Mother, wrestling won from me, I lost, sorry, your dream, my courage is all broken, I have no more strength than this now. Goodbye Wrestling 2001-2024. I will always be indebted to you all for your forgiveness.”
Vinesh’s fellow wrestler Bajrang Punia wrote on social media, “Vinesh you are not a loser, you have been defeated, you will always be a winner, you are not only the daughter of India but also the pride of India.” According to media reports, Vinesh’s uncle Mahavir Phogat has also reacted to her retirement. He has said that he will convince Vinesh to take back her retirement.
The Indian team also filed an appeal in the Court of Arbitration for Sports
The Indian Express has learned that Vinesh and the Indian team have also filed an appeal in the Court of Arbitration for Sport. In this, there has been a demand to give a silver medal to Vinesh Phogat. The apex sporting body is expected to announce its verdict on Thursday morning. An ad hoc division of CAS was established at the Games for the resolution by arbitration of any disputes arising during the Olympic Games or 10 days before the opening ceremony. The matter will be heard on Thursday morning.
