Canada’s Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland has resigned from her post on Monday in a surprise move after disagreeing with Justin Trudeau over US President-elect Donald Trump’s tariff threats. Freeland, who was the Deputy PM as well as the Finance Minister of Canada, resigned as Finance Minister as well. The deputy PM’s resignation marked the first open dissent against Prime Minister Trudeau within his cabinet. Due to this political turmoil in Canada, Trudeau’s chair is in danger.
Trudeau made Leblanc the new finance minister
Shortly after Chrystia Freeland’s sudden resignation, her cabinet colleague Dominic LeBlanc was sworn in as Canada’s new Finance Minister. LeBlanc, a longtime ally of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, served as minister of public safety in his cabinet. The move comes at a time when Canada is facing a $62 billion deficit due to “unexpected expenses.”
This is what Freeland said after her resignation
In her resignation letter, Freeland pointed to Trump’s plan for a 25 percent tariff on Canadian imports, saying, “Our country faces a serious challenge today.” In her resignation letter, Freeland said Trudeau wanted to transfer her to another job, to which she responded: “I have concluded that the only honest and viable path forward is for me to resign from cabinet.”
Second blow to Trudeau
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had not yet recovered from the shock of Chrystia Freeland’s resignation when Khalistan supporter and New Democratic Party (NDP) leader Jagmeet Singh gave him another big blow. Along with this, 23 MPs have written a letter demanding Trudeau’s resignation. Jagmeet Singh has made a big statement regarding Trudeau and said that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau should resign after Chrystia Freeland stepped down from the post of Finance Minister this morning.
