On Sunday, US President Joe Biden issued a heavy warning against re-occupying the Palestinian militant group Hamas-controlled Gaza territory. He delivered a stern warning against Hamas. Baiden will make an extraordinary wartime visit to Israel this week as he seeks to demonstrate staunch support for the country as it works to eliminate Hamas while also pressing for ways to ease humanitarian suffering in Gaza. Biden had expressed a strong interest in making the journey after being invited over the weekend by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
President Biden expressed his concern about Israel’s potential reoccupation of the Gaza Strip, he said, “I think it’d be a big mistake. Look, what happened in Gaza, in my view, is Hamas, and the extreme elements of Hamas don’t represent all the Palestinian people. And I think that it would be a mistake for Israel to occupy Gaza again.”
The President also concerned about the importance of addressing the extremist elements in the region, said, “But there needs to be a Palestinian Authority. There needs to be a path to a Palestinian state. I’m confident that Israel is going to act under the rules of war,”
Biden has offered full-throated support for Israel as it still reels from brutal attacks by Hamas militants on Israeli civilians. More than 1,400 Israelis have been killed. The State Department has said that 30 U.S. citizens were among them, and more than a dozen Americans remain unaccounted for. This week the White House is expected to send a new funding request to Congress, that would include additional military aid for Israel as well as a renewed ask for military and economic aid for Ukraine.
Meanwhile, Israel has vowed to wipe out Hamas, the Islamist group that controls Gaza, in response to the terrorist attack that killed 1,400 people. Hamas claims it is holding up to 250 Israeli and foreign nationals hostage in the enclave. The Israeli military said there are at least 200 captive people.
