Election Commissioner Arun Goel has resigned just weeks before of Lok Sabha elections 2024!

Lok sabha election poll 2024 is just weeks away. In this moment, something shocking has happened, that has shocked the whole nation. Election Commissioner Arun Goel resigned on Saturday! Yes you heard it right! Although his tenure was till December 2027. But the election commissioner has resigned just some days before the announcement of the election days that is expected to held in April or May.  Why Arun Goel resigned? Arun Goel’s resignation came in the middle of the Commission’s peak preparation !

“In pursuance of clause (1) of Section 11 of The Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners (Appointment, Conditions of Service and Term of Office) Act, 2023, the President is pleased to accept the resignation tendered by Shri Arun Goel, Election Commissioner with effect from the 09th March, 2024,” the gazette notification has issued on Saturday. Although the dates of the elections are not yet announced, but the teams have been visiting states to check how much preparations has been done for the election, that is likely to be held in April-May. In the middle of this, the resignation of election commissioner is somehow unexpected!

However, President Droupadi Murmu has accepted his resignation on Saturday. The Election Commission is now headed only by the Chief Election Commissioner named, Rajiv Kumar and without any election commissioners. On last Friday, the Election Commission had held a security meeting with the Union home ministry and the railways officials. The meeting was mainly for the deployment and movement of security personnel across the country. The resignation of Arun Goel, just came after that. Netizens are guessing that it has to have some connection with the meeting. The Election Commission of India now has two vacancies. The three-member Election Commission of India already had a vacancy, now another seat became vacant.

But what is the reason behind Arun Goel’s resignation? Top officials said Mr Goel has told that he has some personal reasons. They also added that the government had tried to stop him from quitting, but he insisted. On speculation that health was a cause for the resignation, they had confirmed that Mr Goel is in perfect health. “The government will start the process of appointing other election commissioners,” said an official.
