Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) founder and general secretary Vijayakanth has died in a private hospital in Chennai. ‘Captain’ Vijayakanth was put on ventilator support after being admitted to the hospital. Vijaykant died at the age of 71. The DMDK founder had left the world of acting and entered politics.
Admitted to the Hospital
On Thursday morning, his party DMDK said that Vijayakanth was on ventilator support. “Initial tests confirmed coronavirus infection, he was put on ventilator support due to difficulty in breathing,” the party said in a release. Even before this, Vijaykant was admitted to the hospital on November 18 for treatment of febrile illness and was discharged on December 11, 2023.
Past Ties to South Cinema
Veteran Tamil actor and DMDK founder Vijayakanth was unwell for quite some time and his wife Premalatha took charge of the party just a few days ago. He was also the opposition leader in Tamil Nadu from 2011 to 2016. Before entering politics, Vijayakanth was a successful actor, producer, and director.
